tonight, while i was out with my sister, the snow started coming down...a couple hours later, there were three inches! it is gorgeous. my sister was getting annoyed with me for hopping around, i was so excited.
i got home and took a walk in it. as much as i love mild beachy weather, this is absolute perfection: fort collins at night when it's snowing. it's very quiet. if you don't move, you can hear a faint noise as snowflakes hit plants, but that's it. the air is very still too - nothing like the coast where the breeze cools you off. it's well below freezing and i wasn't cold at all, even my bare ears. if you walk around, the fresh snow crunches under each step. the sky is opaque, shades of blue and pink from reflected street lights. everything smells so clean and fresh and cold! and the whole town's asleep while it gets covered in a thick blanket of snow.
i wish i could spend the entire night outside. |

got back to colorado tonight. my parents had pulled out a couple boxes from storage of my old stuff they wanted me to go through, so i dug into it. lots of good books for my bookshelf, bunch of stuffed animals, some very funny old photographs. a whole bunch of bitchin' posters that i have photographed for posterity.
there was also a photograph of katie from her high school graduation, a couple of mixtapes i'd made for her (that she'd copied for me later), and a small origami stars mobile that i had made for when her first son was born but never ended up giving to her. |

This evening at the Chestnut Hill, Mass., Barnes & Noble Store, I tried out the nook 1.1.0 software which enabled me to connect to in-store promotions. First up: a free cookie. Here's how it went... |

i went down to union square again today, actually bought the couch. yay! i'll have it first week of january. *hop*
then i spent around an hour and a half looking at clothes. gah. i both hate and love shopping for clothes, because i either have something in mind that i can't find, or i go poking around and find too much. today was the latter - i could have easily dropped a couple grand. of course i'm not going to do that, but...
the upshot of this is i'm ready to get some nicer clothes. i'll wait till after christmas, cause my sister usually gets me something, but i tried on some hugo boss jeans and a dkny shirt that are very different from what i normally wear, and i really liked them. there were some awesome jackets and scarves too, and of course i drooled over suits for a while.
of course, advice is always appreciated as well. :-) |

| public transit |
[Dec. 20th, 2009|03:46 pm] |
oh, saturday evenings on the bart.
in the downtown berkeley station last night, there was an old guy, doubled over shuffling/stumbling down the platform, positively _wheezing_ with every step. i looked a few times to see if he was going to collapse. no, he was walking over to one of the supports, so he could take a leak on it. and then wheeze and stumble back to wait for his train.
once on said train (albeit different cars), there was a half dozen very loud, very obnoxious persians - early 20s, going out to a fancy club, flirting profusely and exclaiming about how each of their respective parents "did the revolution". that was bad enough, until someone in the back of the car said, loud enough for everyone to hear, "sand niggers". between the persians and the black people on the train who were also noticeably upset, i'm really surprised a fight didn't break out before everyone got to their destinations.
oh, and there was some old hippy looking guy (long hair, long beard, etc.) rocking red tights, a red shirt, a black leather jacket and a black leather...santa hat? some kind of hardcore hippy santa? i really couldn't figure it out. |

why are people so dumb about relationships? why are difficult situations preferred over easy ones? why are unknown quantities so much more tantalizing than known good things? why are people so cognizant of being dumb, but still so complicit in it? |

trains were delayed by an hour this evening. a pedestrian was hit in san mateo. :-(
it was _wet_ in sf this morning, and my rear bike tire basically turns into a hose pointed right at my ass. my pants were pretty wet, until around noon. i need some sort of butt protection.
subscribing to the new yorker is like getting a second job. if it were monthly, that'd be about right. i'd get the sunday ny times too, but i think then i might have to cut down my hours at work.
it sounds like my 20yr old cat back home is at very rapidly approaching the end of her remarkable, furry lifespan. this may come to a cusp in the next few days, right in time for me to come home.
it sounds like this fall was probably the last semester my mom is going to teach. |

oh aramark and your silly cafeteria food. today i had some sort of burrito. it contained 1): black beans - fairly standard. 2) pulled pork - a little strange, kind of a sweet bbq flavor, but y'know, not bad. 3) "tropical salsa" - pineapple, mango, melon and strawberries? hrm. 4) shredded cabbage. ?? 5) "cuban guacamole" - cleverly named "regular guacamole". and despite all that, _blandest_ burrito ever. normally i'm an upstanding burrito enthusiast, but look, just throwing some leftovers in a tortilla does not a burrito make. sheesh! |

oh man i hate ants! i've seen one or two in the apt up till now, but nothing serious. well last night got home from santacon. we'd had mimosas, and a dirty glass was still on the kitchen table...along with a bunch of ants! they were coming in from the balcony! argh. i killed a lot of them, cleaned up a bit, and went to bed. today, they'd moved on and were creeping into other parts of the apt! bastards! i got a bunch of those little ant traps and liberally distributed them around, while moving the bunch of bananas and brushing ants off it. hopefully that takes care of the problem - haven't seen any in a few hours...
i had a productive day today. groceries, more couch shopping, more biking around town, got a public library card and a book, made some tasty dinner, braved the madhouse that is the downtown shopping district of sf. holy geez. i'm about to buy this couch. hmmm. |
